David Keys

LCSW, MSW, MBA.

Hi, and welcome to Today Has Purpose. I’m David Keys, and I founded this practice in order to provide comprehensive, high-quality clinical psychotherapy to the Pittsburgh area. I strongly believe that therapy should be inclusive, individualized, and rooted in evidence-based treatment modalities. As a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), I have spent many years working with diverse client populations and in a variety of settings. I am well-versed in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Informed Care including Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), and Attachment Theory, to name a few.

The clinicians at Today Has Purpose have a combined experience of over 75 years. Our goal is to make every client we work with feel prioritized and empowered to address their concerns in a safe and professional environment. Like our name implies, we want all of our clients to realize their potential and embrace every day with a sense of purpose and commitment. Whether you have engaged in treatment in the past and are searching for a new clinician, or you are reaching out and curious about therapy for the first time, we are here to welcome you.

Meet Dr. Daniel Marston

Daniel Marston, PhD
Dr. Daniel Marston

PhD, ABPP

Hello and Welcome!! I am Dr. Daniel Marston, a Licensed Psychologist in the state of Pennsylvania. I have been in clinical practice for over 20 years and have helped many people overcome many different challenges. I specialize in cognitive-behavioral therapy and am board-certified in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP).

My approach to counseling is a strong combination of caring and research. I strongly believe that counseling needs to be much more than just “friendly talk” and that the only way to do this is to base it solidly on clinical research. Caring is the way that I show that I want to help and research provides a path on how best to help. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is the most scientifically-supported counseling approach and that is the reason why I choose this approach.

I am the author of two books, both focused on the application of psychological research to clinical work. In addition, I have over 20 years of experience teaching at the university level where I have taught courses in counseling, psychological development, research design and statistics. My background also includes national presentations on cognitive-behavioral therapy along with depression, autism, neuropsychology and behavioral disorders.

My approach to counseling starts with helping clients develop meaningful goals. These are goals created in a safe, inviting and respectful atmosphere where we work on finding what will help you make strong and positive change. We then work together on interventions shown in clinical research to be effective in reaching these goals. Caring is always part of my counseling process and all my clinical approaches respect the complexities and challenges my clients face.

I have helped people deal effectively with many types of problems and face many types of situations. Although I have a wide range of clinical experience, my areas of specialization include depression, bipolar disorder, autism, and confidence problems.

You can be sure that when you work with me you are choosing to work with someone who respects you, respects what you are going through and is committed to help you make meaningful changes. We are not looking for “easy answers” or “feel good” sayings in counseling but, rather, for ways to make lasting improvements. I am looking forward very much in helping you make these improvements.

Nationally Certified Counselor, M.Ed., NCC, M.A

Hello! My name is Jess Keys, and I am a Nationally Certified Counselor who recently completed an M.Ed. at California University of Pennsylvania and am working towards licensure. My approach to counseling is solidly rooted in building a relationship that reflects positive regard, empathy, and research-based practice and techniques. From childhood into adulthood, individuals can experience turbulent situations that are challenging and require a healthy toolbox of skills, coping strategies, and mindsets that can aid them in times of stress and even in crisis.

Regarding therapeutic approaches, I employ multiple theoretical frameworks such as CBT, DBT, Psychodynamic, REBT, and Existential therapy. I strongly believe in the uniqueness and individuality of each client and their presenting issues, and therefore, I also believe that a different therapy must be created for each client. As humans, we make meaning of our lives by how we engage with ourselves and with those around us. I view the opportunity to work with clients as a privilege and being actively concerned for and engaged in the life and growth of another is what counseling and therapy is all about.

Prior to becoming a therapist, I spent a decade as a Masters level educator working as a high school teacher, soccer coach, mentor, tutor, and as a state policy board advisor for education. I have been on multiple interdisciplinary teams in an effort to provide comprehensive support to students and their families. This experience gave me the opportunity to not only understand students from multiple perspectives, but also recognize the complexities and importance of family dynamics. Our children that need the most love and support often ask for it in the most unloving of ways. I also have presented at the Pennsylvania Counseling Association Conference on grief and loss, especially surrounding the loss associated with miscarriage. Supporting women and their partners during this time is much-needed and often overlooked.

I look forward to helping you achieve the goals that you have set and create opportunities for you to find purpose and meaning in life. The fact that you are here, right now, means that you are already on the path towards a higher level of self-awareness and love. Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is to show up.

As a Licensed Professional Counselor, it’s my goal to help you feel respected and create a safe environment for you to share whatever you need to during therapy. It is my intention to empower you, strengthen your individuality, help to strengthen your belief that you have great worth, and that you can overcome traumatic events and memories. We are more than the thoughts we have that we’re ashamed of, we’re more than the worst moments of our lives, much more than our mistakes, and in my practice, I respect the courage it takes to be vulnerable, honest, and open to new ways of thinking.

I work with adults on issues such as self-esteem, relationships, trauma, depression, anxiety, and addiction. I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and I am trained as an Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapist. EMDR is an alternative method to talk-therapy that has been proven to be effective in resolving Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Life can be messy; it’s okay to feel lost, stuck in a rut, or starting over. I appreciate the courage it takes to ask for help and invite someone into your fears and perceived flaws. If you would like to schedule an appointment or ask questions about therapy, please contact me. I’m honored to be invited to share in your healing process. Let change begin!

Praise from our Patients

“I found my life became unmanageable. I had never been to any kind of therapy or counseling before and had strong reservations about the whole process. When I met Dave Keys for the first time I was stand-offish to say the least. I told him I don’t believe this is going to help me but I owed it to myself and family to try. There were times I wanted to give up but Mr. Keys told me to stick with it and I trusted in him. I continued to see him for about 2 years. Thanks to his guidance and myself putting in hard work, he help me see that I had value in this world other than what I could do for someone. My family relationships greatly improved as well as my career. To this day I still reflect on our time together and what I learned to navigate through tough days/times.”

-Benjamin B., 36 years old

“David helped me find the skills within myself to live a happier and fuller life. I’m now much better able to deal with confrontation, and I don’t let others control my life anymore.”

-Jim M., 42 years old
